Summaries and Analysis of Results of Activities Required by the Environmental Protection Plan (EPP)

No observed non-radiological impacts on the environment due to the operation of Catawba Nuclear Station were noted during the reporting period.

No evidence of trends toward irreversible damage to the i

environment were identified.

Section 4.2.1 - Aerial Remote Sensing Pre-operational infrared photographs were obtained in 1983 and 1984.

f 0)erational data was obtained again in 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1990.

The i

p10tographs of the 1990 aerial remote sensing are included in.

Aerial remote sensing was conducted in January 1990 rather than in September 1989, due to damage by " Hurricane Hugo" to the airplane equipped for aerial overflights.

The January 1990 Infrared photos do not indicate any adverse damage to conifer foliage in the vicinity of the Catawba site related to cooling tower operation.

Based on these results, the next scheduled infrared monitoring will be flown as originally scheduled in September or October 1991.

Section 5.4.1(1) - EPP Non-Conp11ance and Corrective Actions 1.

A copy of nonroutine event reports, describing exceedance of an NPDES permit limit that were submitted to the state agency, was not forwarded i

to the NRC at the same time.

Corrective Action Individuals responsible for submittal of NPDES reports were notified of EPP requirements.

A copy of nonroutine event reports submitted to the state agency in 1989 is attached.

j Corrective Action I

Compared the January 1990 aerial remote sensing data to past data.

Section 5.4.1(2) - Changes in Station Design or Operation. Tests, and Experiments which Involve a Potentially Significant Unreviewed Question No station changes were identified that involved a

potentially significant unreviewed environmental question.

Section 5.4.1(3)

Nonroutine Reports Submitted in Accordance with Subsection 5.4.2 of EPP.

1.

A monthly NPDES monitoring report, describing nonroutine events (foam on the discharge and a pH excursion at Catawba Nuclear Station Outfall 001), was submitted to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on June 27, 1989.

2.

A report, describing a nonroutine event (foam on the discharge at Catawba Nuclear Station Outfall 001), was submitted to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on July 10, 1989.

3.

A report, describing the release of sodium nitrite into Lake Wylie, was submitted to the South Carolina Emergency Response Commission and the York County Emergency Preparedness Agency on August 18, 1989.

4.

An oil spill of approximately 25 gallons was reported to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, the National Response Center, and the NRC resident inspector on September 25, 1989.

5.

A monthly NPDES monitoring report, describing a nonroutine event (overflow of cooling tower 2A at Catawba Nuclear Station to a yard drain that released to Lake Wylie), was submitted to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on October 27, 1989.

6.

A monthly NPDES monitoring report, describing a nonroutine event (waste from RN pump bearing cleaning had a pH and an iron excursion prior to mixing with low pressure service water that is released to Lake Wylie),

was submitted to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on November 28, 1989.

Section 5.4.1(4) - NPDES Reports Related to Matters Identified in Section 2.1 of the EPP.
