FACILITY: Arkansas Power arid Light Company Arkansas Nuclear One, Units Nos. 1 and 2 (Docket'Nos. 50313 and 50368) .

SUBJECT:

INADVERTENT INITIATION OF UNIT 2 EMERGENCY SAFETY FEATURE SYSTEMS The failure of a solenoid coil in the Unit No.1 Main Steam Stop' Valve 1A resulted in closure of the valve and a trip of Unit No. 1 Reactor at about 1 1:19 p.m., CST, September 16, 1978. The sequence of events which followed led to the inadvertent initiation of the Unit 2 Engineered Safety Features Systems and subsequent spray down of the Unit No. 2 Containment with 50,000 gallons of borated water from the Containment Spray System. Unit.

No.1 was at 100% power and Unit No. 2 was in hotstandby (540 F) with post core hot functional testing in progress at the time of the event.

The Safety Injection Systems did not inject any borated water into the 1 [ primary coolant systemsince the primary system was at a higher pressure.

Fifty thousand gallons of borated water was sprayed into the Unit No. 2 containment by the containment Spray System. There was no release of '.

l radioactivity.

j Unit No. 1 has been returned to power (100%) and Unit No. 2 is in cold l

' shut down. The licensee is reviewing the consequences of aaving intro-duced 50,000 gallons of borated water into the containment.

The licensee and Region IV do not plan to issue a press release.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone at 9:30 l a.m. CST from the Acting Plant Manager of Arkansas Nuclear One.
