FACILITY: Arkansas Power arid Light Company Arkansas Nuclear One, Units Nos. 1 and 2 (Docket'Nos. 50313 and 50368)
SUBJECT:
INADVERTENT INITIATION OF UNIT 2 EMERGENCY SAFETY FEATURE SYSTEMS The failure of a solenoid coil in the Unit No.1 Main Steam Stop' Valve 1A resulted in closure of the valve and a trip of Unit No. 1 Reactor at about 1
1:19 p.m., CST, September 16, 1978.
The sequence of events which followed led to the inadvertent initiation of the Unit 2 Engineered Safety Features Systems and subsequent spray down of the Unit No. 2 Containment with 50,000 gallons of borated water from the Containment Spray System.
Unit.
No.1 was at 100% power and Unit No. 2 was in hotstandby (540 F) with post core hot functional testing in progress at the time of the event.

primary coolant systemsince the primary system was at a higher pressure.

1 Fifty thousand gallons of borated water was sprayed into the Unit No. 2 containment by the containment Spray System. There was no release of l
radioactivity.
j Unit No. 1 has been returned to power (100%) and Unit No. 2 is in cold shut down. The licensee is reviewing the consequences of aaving intro-l duced 50,000 gallons of borated water into the containment.
The licensee and Region IV do not plan to issue a press release.
Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone at 9:30 l
a.m. CST from the Acting Plant Manager of Arkansas Nuclear One.
