l SAFETY EVALUATION BY THE OFFICE OF NUCLEAR REACTOR REGULATION I,NSPECTION OF REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM PIPING COMMONWEALTH EDISON COMPANY LASALLE COUNTY STATION, UNIT 2 DOCKET N0. 50-374

1.0 INTRODUCTION

During the LaSalle Unit 2 first refueling outage, Mechanical Stress Improvement (MSIP) was applied to 39 susceptible welds in the reactor recirculation and residual heat removal systems. A post treatment ultrasonic examination was conducted in accordance with Generic Letter No. 84-11.

Scope of Inspection Ultrasonic inspection was performed upon 48 of the 129 susceptible welds that met the Generic Letter 84-11 criteria for reinspection. Of these, 80 were in the reactor recirculation system, 24 were in the residual heat removal (RHR) system and 25 were in the reactor water cleanup and jet pump instrumentation nozzle penetrations. Therefore, the licensee has satis-factorily completed the piping inspections in accordance with the guidelines in Generic Letter 84-11.

2.0 EVALUATION Through inspections, the NRC staff has determined that the UT personnel performing the evaluation have successfully completed the IGSCC crack sizing practical examinations in accordance with I&E Bulletin 83-02 and that the same procedures and techniques were used in the in-plant examinations. The staff's findings are contained in Inspection Report No. 50-374-87002 (DRS).

3.0 CONCLUSION

S Based on our review of the licensee's submittals and inspections of UT personnel, we conclude that the IGSCC inspection was performed in accordance with Generic Letter 84-11 and is satisf actory and that LaSalle Unit 2 can safely operate in its present configuration for an additional 18-month fuel cycle.
