P1 Group 2 P43 Water Backing Top View This Preliminary WPS serves to qualify POR 01-43-T-801 for ambient temperature temperbead welding on water-backed P-1 base materials.
A temperbead methodology (similar to that described in Draft ASME Code Case N-612) will be used to deposit three weld layers on the P-1 Group 2 base rnaterial groove face prior to installation of the remainder of the weld.
Water backing will be applied to simulate welding on water-filled pipe, and water will be circulate to simulate an infinite heat sink.
Water will not be introduced into the weld joint (i.e., the weld area will remain dry throughout weld installation).
PWHT will not be performed. The temperbead approach is not mandated by ASME Code requirements, but is being used to minimize adverse effects of witer backing on base metal impact properties. When the resulting POR is complete, it will be used to weld on water backed, impact-tested piping without PWHT and without elevated preheat. 1 Filler Metal Current Weld Type / Amperage Volt Travel Speed Lcyer(s) Process Class Diameter Polarity Range Range Range Other All O GTAW ERNiCrFe-7 0.035" @ DCEP @ @ 3.5 - 8.0 IPM @ NA G

NOTES
@ Stepty-step instructions goveming weld installation are documented on the following pages of this Preliminary WPS. Compliance with these instructions is mandatory.
G ERNiCrFe-7 electrode (UNS N00052)is classified as F-43 in accordance with ASME Code Case 2142.
G Heat input controlis mandatory. Heat input rate is determined by the emperage, voltage, and travel speed used to install each weld pass, and is measured in Joules per inch. Three temperbead layers shall initia!!y be installed, as specified in the attached instructions. After these three temperbead layers are completed, the remainder of the weld shall be installed. Installation shall comply with the attached instructions, and the parameters used to install each portion of the weld shall be recorded on the attached technique sheets.
@ This preliminary WPS is issued based on the requirements of ASME Section XI,1992 Edition. Use of thrs WPS in applications govemed by other Code Editions / Addenda is permitted, provided a review demonstrates compliance with all applicable requirements of these other editions / addenda.
P:ge 4 of g eso m omyo Instructions for WPS-01-43-T-801 Temper Bead Repair of P-1 Group 2 Base Materials welded to P-43 Base Material using ERNiCrFe-7 Solid Bare Wire The followini; instruct' ions shall be followed for the welding of PQR 01-43-T 801. These instructions are to be used in addition to those contained on pages I and 2 of this WPS.
- 1. All welding shall comply with ASME Section IX and XI. All essentist and supplementary essential variables shall be recorded.
- 2. All welding filler materials shall be controlled in accordance with a program that assures they are identified as acceptable untit consumed.
- 3. Prior to weld installation, water backing shall be established as follows:
A. Attach the carbon steel backing strap to the back of both coupons using seal welds. ERNiCrFe-7 tiller material, and the manual GTAW process shall be used. Minimize seat weld size (these welds serve only to keep water from entering the weld area during PQR welding).
B. Construct a metal container, and attach this container to the edges of the procedure qualification test coupon. Either mechanical or welded attachment methods may be used. If welding is used, use ERNicrFe-7 for all welds that attach the container to the procedure qualification coupons. The container may be constructed of Carbon Ster.1 or other suitable material.
C. Fill the container with water. Establish a water flow through the container prior to installation of the first temperbead weld layer. Tap water may be used, provided it is within a temperature range of 50 F to 65'F. Maintain adequate water flow throughout weld installation, to simulate the efTects of an infinite heat sink.
- 4. The weld installation sequence shall be as follows:
A. The P1 Group 2 base material and the adjacent backing strap shall be buttered with a single-layer GTAW deposit. Welding parameters for this layer shall be recorded on the attached Technique Data Sheet for Layer 1. The final appearance of the first l weld layer shall be as shown in the following sketch. l I
