Dear Mr. Schwencer:

Subject:

Clinton Power Station Unit #1 SER Confirmatory Issue #58

Reference:

1) NUREG-0853, Supplement No. 1, " Safety Evaluation Report", dated July,1982
2) Meeting between IP and NRC on February 16-17, 1983;

" Status of CPS SER Outstanding and Confirmatory Issues" Pursuant to the requirements of Reference 1) and the request of Mr. John Stang during our meeting (Reference 2), a fire barrier information matrix was developed and attached for NRC review.

The matrix is complete with the exception of two outstanding fire tests which are expected to be done in mid-1983. The test reports for oversized fire doors and HVAC duct wrap are anticipated by 9/1/83.

We trust that the matrix is satisfactory and we plan to supply reports in September to close this issue.

Sincerely, OQNu't G. E. Wull'er Supervisor - Licensing Nuclear Station Engineering OV/lt cc: Dr. H. Abelson, NRC Clinton Project Manager Mr. J. E. Stang, Jr., NRC CEB Mr. H. H. Livermore, NRC Resident Inspector Illinois Department of Riclear Safety 8304110462 830404 i PDR ADOCK 05000461 \

  • The National Concrete Masonary Association provides technical data which states that a 7 5/8" by 11 5/8" hollow concrete block will give an-estimated 3-hr fire-resistance rating.
    • A fire test will be conducted this year by Portland Cement Association to determine the insulation wrap fire resistance. capabilities. Results of test are expected by 9/1/83.

Some doors do not bear a UL fire rating label due to dimensional requirements. A fire test will be conducted this year to qualify these doors / frames to bear the UL Label "A". Report of test results is expected by 9/1/83.

Note: As a result of the seismic requirements being more stringent than

. fire protection. requirements for walls, floors, and ceilings, the smaller thickness'in these is found to be 12 inches with the exception for walls constructed with 7 5/8" by 11 5/8" hollow concrete blocks.
