Subject:

Response to Request for Additional Information Regarding Fire Questions for the Clinton Power Station Individual Plant Examination of External Events (IPEEE)

Dear Madam or Sir:

By letter dated February 25,1998, from Jon B. Hopkins, the NRC requested additional information regarding the Clinton Power Station (CPS) Individual Plant Examination of External Events (IPEEE) submittal in the seismic and fire damage areas.

Illinois Power (IP) letter U-603077 dated September 29,1998, provided the IP response to the seismic-related questions while letter U-603132 dated December 28, 1998, provided the IP response to fire-related questions three, four, and five. In letter U-603132, it was noted that IP was collaborating with the Electric Power Reseaah Institute (EPRI) to answer fire-related questions one and two and would provide a response to these questions or provide a revised schedule for response following EPRI resolution of the subject questions.

By letter dated June 15,1999, to Mr. Dave Modeen, Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), from Mr. Thomas L. King, NRC Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, Director-Division of Risk Analysis & Applications, the NRC notified NEI that the NRC j' staff had reviewed a May 1999 EPRI report entitled " Guidance for Development of Response to Generic Request for Additional Information on Fire Individual Plant Examination for External Events," and found the report acceptable for use in implementation of the fire IPEEE. Based on this information, the purpose of this letter is to provide a revised schedule for IP to respond to fire-related questions one and two 3 of the subject request for additional information. Based on a review of the above EPRI Oo report with respect to the level of effort required to resolve fire-related questions one and two, IP will provide a response to fire-related questions one and two by January 31, 2000.
