Dear Mr. O ' Re illy :

a PG LAR G AN TRY CRANE - GEAR MISALIGNMENT NO. 1 Uh2T '

SA LEM NUC LEA R GENERATIN G STATION On June ll, 1976 a verbal report was made to Region 1, Office of Inspection and Enforcement advising that during an inspection s,

it was discovered that there was a misalignment of gearing in . ;

the No. 1 Unit Polar Gantry Crane. This report was in accordance ,

with the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). =

The following is a detailed analysis and report on the subject:

~

While performing a service-inspection of the Polar Gantry Crane .

during turnover from the plant construction phase to the plant -,

operating phase, excessive vibraticn of the main hoist was observed. After investigating, the cause of the vibration was -

determined to be the misalignment of the hoist drum gear (drum _

assembly) ano pinion. .-

Corrective action consisting of realigning and securing the drum assembly, and dressing the gears has been initiated.

There was no affe^t to the safety or health of the operating staff or the general public. The implications of this condition, if it were not corrected, are that the hoist assembly would be -

subjected to above normal wear and over an extended period of =

years the load carrying capability of the crane would have been -

adversely effected. -

The corrective action vill be comple ted by July 1, 1976. $
