Dear Mr. Grier:

DM WATER MAKEUP TO THE AUXILIARY FEEDWATER STORAGE TANK DESIGN DEFICIENCY 10CFRSo-~ 55 (E) "SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCY" NO. 2 UNIT .

SALEM GENERATING STATION On January 28, 1980, a verbal report was.made- to your.-office relative to a design deficiency involving check valve DR-7 which could potentially drain the auxiliary feedwater storage tank in the event of a seismic occurrence. This. report was made pursuant to the provisions of 10CFR50.55 (e).

PSE&G Engineering. has e,valuated this condition and of* ~he various options available: to 'correct this design deficien¢y, P~E&G elected to have the 2DR-7' valve qualified to meet the applicable seismic*

Class I loading. The seismic test was satisfactorily completed to IEEE~344, 1975 standard on January 30,. 1980 at the Franklin Institute Research Laboratories, Inc., Philadelphia.

In order that the field piping configuration simulates the test conditions, the valve 2DR-7 in the field requires an additional support. This additional support will be completed on Unit No. 2 by February 28, 1980.

If you require additional information, we will be pleased to discuss it with you.

Very truly yours, CC: Mr. L. J. Norrholm NRC, Hancocks Bridge soo4100 C/3
