Dear Mr. Collins:

River Bend Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-458 J Interim Report /DR-109 On April 8, 1983, Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) notified Region IV of a condition potentially reportable under 10CFR50.55(e) concerning Velan 3/4", 600 pound, socket-welded globe valves with counterbores that are not concentric to the center of the valves (DR-109). The nonconcentric counterbores may cause welding problems and/or the violation of minimum wall thickness. GSU is awaiting additional information from our architect-engineer. An interim or final status report will be submitted by August 4, 1983.

Sincerely,

. A J. E. Boner Manager-Engineering, Nuclear Fuels & Licensing River Bend Nuclear Group JEB/PJD/kt cc: Director of Inspection & Enforcement U.~ S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 R. L. Brown (SRI) 8306170395 830613
