Re: Arkansas Nuclear One - Units Nos. 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-313 and 50-368 Environmental Qualification of Class IE Equipment Revised Orders for Modification of License

Dear Mr. Denton:

By Orders dated September 19, 1980, the NRC Staff required that Arkansas Power & Light Company submit information responsive to I&E Bulletin 79-01B to the NRC Region IV Office by November 1, 1980. The Order for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit No. 1 ("ANO-1") , which was published in the Federal Register on October 6, 1980 (45 Fed. Reg. 66253),provided that the Licensee may request a hearing on the Order by October 27, 1980. The Order for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit No. 2 ("ANO-2"),

which was published in the Federal Register on October 3, 1980 (45 Fed. Reg. 65709),provided that the Licensee may request a hearing on that Order by October 23, 1980.

We understand from discussions with the Staff that the scope of information to be provided in response to these Orders is about to be modified by Supplement No. 3 to Bulletin 79-OlB. However, as noted, today is the last day provided in the ANO-2 Order for timely requests for i hearing on that Order. Of course, we cannot waive the right to request an appropriate hearing in anticipation of the forthcoming modifications in Supplement No. 3.

Nevertheless, since Supplement No. 3 may in fact resolve the concerns we have in timely responding to the Orders, 0 13 /

Mr. Harold R. Denton October 23, 1980 ,

Page Tso we believe that the prudent approach is to request a brief extension of the deadlines for both ANO-1 and ANO-2.

Accordingly, we hereby request that the NRC Staff extend the time for requesting a hearing on the Orders for ANO-1 and ANO-2 from October 27 and October 23, respectively, to October 31, 1980. In the event that this request for a one-week extension is denied, please consider this to be a formal request for hearing on the ANO-2 docket, recognizing of course that the issuance vf Supplement No. 3 may moot the request # r hearing.

Sincer , .
