Dear Mr. Ballard:

Beginning August 22, 1979 water elevations of Interdunal Pond 7 have been reported as " dry" when the water had receded from the point of data collection. This was not to imply the entire pond was without water which has been the topic of recent discussion with the Park Service. The slope of the pond bottom at this location is very slight. Therefore, a minor decrease in water level exposes a large area of the pond bottom making it difficult and impractical to obtain a water elevation.

To avoid further confusion, as of January 16, 1980, ponds where the water has receded from the point of data collection will be reported as "inaccesible". Only when a pond is completely without water will " dry" appear on the weekly reports.

Texas Instruments, Inc. provides independent additional monitoring data of water depths on a quarterly basis. Please find enclosed a letter from Texas Instruments, Inc. dated January 30, 1980 containing data of water depths taken during 1978 and 1979 of Pond 7. Also enclosed is " Figure 1" indicating the two measuring stations used for these measurements. Please note Texas Instruments' referenced " Pond C" is synonymous with

" Pond 7".

Dear Sir:

f Texas Instru=ents has been conducting aquatic and water chemistry sampling in nearshore interdunal ponds near the Bailly Generating Station since May 1974.

During this ti=e the water levels in these ponds have fluctuated season.11y. The ponds are generally at their highest level in April and lowest during summer or fall. Water depth =easurements during our quarterly sampling at stations 19 and 20 in Pond C during 1978 and 1979 were:

POND C (meters)

STATION 19 STATION 20 1978 April .91 .76 June .61 .61 August .76 .76 November .61 .61 1979 April .91 .76 June .60 .60 August .75 .45 November .50 .50 These measurements were fairly typical of those observed during previous years. During our October 1979 on-site aquatic bird habitats evaluation, water levels appeared lower than normal, although no actual water depth measure =ents were taken. However; water levels during the follcwing month appeared nor=al.
