Letter from A. E. Scherer (SCE) to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Document Control Desk dated May 11, 2006;

Subject:

Docket No. 50-362, Third Ten-Year Inservice Inspection (ISI) Interval Relief Request ISI-3-22 Request for Alternative to ASME Code Rules for the Inside Diameter Structural Weld Overlay Repair Process for Control Element Drive Mechanism (CEDM) # 56, San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 3

Dear Sir or Madam:

This letter revises the duration of Southern California Edison (SCE) relief request ISI-3-22, submitted to the NRC by the referenced letter.ISI-3-22 requested approval of an alternative repair method with the intent that the repair would be good for the life of the plant. SCE submitted ISI-3-22 as a contingency to use in either the Cycle 14 or the Cycle 15 refueling outage as needed based on inspection results of CEDM # 56.Inspection results that trigger a repair of CEDM # 56 in accordance with ISI-3-22 are not expected and will be evaluated under SCE's corrective action program. SCE believes it is reasonable to restrict approval of the post repair operating period to one cycle at this time. As a result, SCE is revising the Duration of Proposed Alternative for ISI-3-22 to be: Relief is requested to perform the repair, if needed, during the Cycle 14 refueling outage, and to operate for one cycle, which will end with the Cycle 15 refueling outage.P.O.
