SUMMARY

OF THE MAY 2008 ANNUAL ASSESSMENT MEETING WITH AMERGEN

On May 15, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., the NRC conducted an Annual Assessment Meeting with AmerGen Energy Company LLC (AmerGen) at the Oyster Creek Emergency Operating Facility in Toms River, NJ. The NRC requested the meeting with AmerGen management to present NRC's assessment of the safety performance of Oyster Creek Generating Station for the calendar year 2007.

A notice of the licensee meeting was issued on April 25, 2008, and was posted on the NRC's external (public) web page (ADAMS Accession No. ML081160259).

The NRC presented and discussed its assessment of the safety performance of Oyster Creek Generating Station for the period of January 1 through December 31, 2007, as documented in our letter dated March 3, 2008 (ADAMS Accession No. ML080610008). The NRC presentation included background on the Reactor Oversight Process (ROP), Oyster Creek's assessment results, and an overview of planned inspections for the remainder of the year. The NRC's overall assessment was that AmerGen operated Oyster Creek Generating Station in a manner that preserved public health and safety. During the meeting, AmerGen stated they were in general agreement with NRC's assessment and discussed planned areas for improvement. The NRC presentation is available on ADAMS (ADAMS Accession No. ML081060600).

Local officials, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection officials, licensee personnel, members of the local press, and members of the public observed this meeting and were offered the opportunity to question the NRC regarding AmerGen's performance and the role of the agency in ensuring safe plant operations at the end of the meeting. The question and answer period accommodated all individuals who desired to speak or ask questions after the business portion of the meeting had been completed.

Sincerely, /RA/ Ronald R. Bellamy, Ph.D., Chief Projects Branch 6 Division of Reactor Projects Attachments:
