SECTlON1PREFACE ABSTRACTThisreportpresentsthedataobtainedfromtheanalysesofenvironmental samplescollected fortheAmericanElectricPowerServiceCorporation DonaldC.CookNuclearStationEnvironmental Radiological Surveillance Programfortheperiod01January1981through31December1981.Theactivitypresentabovethedetection limitsintheroutinely collected samplemediawasobservedtobeofnaturalandatmospheric origin.Theresultsshowthattheradiation dosetoamemberofthegeneralpopulation didnotexceedthetechnical specifications of1Xofthe10CFR20limitduring1981.

INTRODUCTION TheDonaldC.CookNuclearStationofAmericanElectricPowerServiceCorporation consistsoftwoWestinghouse PWRunits(Unit1andUnit2).Eachunitconsistsofapressurized waterreactor(PWR)whichgenerates about3250megawatts (MW)ofheattogenerateabout1100MMofelectricity.

ThestationislocatedinBentonHarbor,Mich-igan.TheD.C.CookPlantutilizesapressurized waterreactorwitharadwastehold-upandtreatment systemthathasbeendesignedtokeepcdradioactive releasestoaslowasispractblelevels. However, smallquantities ofnoblegasesandradioiodine maybereleasedtoLakeMich-igan.Thequantities ofradionuclides releasedtotheenvironment areexpectedtobeminiscule andinsignificant asasourceofpotential exposuretofloraandfaunainthearea. However, directradiation ex-posuretomanandradionuclide accumulations invariouscomponents offoodchainstomanwillbecarefully monitored.

Theenvironmental radiologicaLmanitoring programisintendedtoservethefollowing purposes:

a)Toyield'averagevaluesofradiation levelsandconcentrations ofradioactive materialinvariousmediaoftheenvironment.

b)Toidentifysamplelocations and/ortypesofsamplesthatdeviatefromtheaverages.

c)Todocumentseasonalvariations thatcouldbeerroneously interpreted whenthepowerstationisoperating.

d)Toindicatetherangeofvaluesthatshouldbeconsidered "background" forvarioustypesofsamples.

ThebasicapproachfortheDonaldC.CookNuclearPlantistocon-trolthereleaseofradioactive materialatlevel'sfarbelowthatwhichwouldbeexpectedtocausedetrimental impactontheenvironment.

Theenvironmental radioactivity surveillance programwillbecloselycoord-inatedwithconditions ofplantoperation andsubjecttoperiodicreview.Levelsofenvironmental radioactivity aresubjecttochangeforreasonsinnowayrelatedtotheoperation oftheD.C.CookNuclearPlant.Therefore, theradioactivity surveillance programhasbeende-signedtoincludereference or"background" stationsaswellas"indicator" stations.
