Subject:

NUCLEAR PROJECT NO. 3 POTENTIAL 10CFR50.55(e) DEFICIENCY WESTINGHOUSE DS/DSL CIRCUIT BREAKER DEFICIENCIES (D/N#54)

On October 12, 1984, the Supply System notified your office of a potential 10CFR50.55(e) deficiency concerning the subject condition. The condition involves possible damage to internal control wiring in type DS and DSL circuit breakers supplied by Westinghouse. The damage can occur when a breaker is moved on the extension rails into or out of its compartment. This movement of the breaker could possibly pinch the wire bundle between the wire retainer and the steel gas shield mounted on the power center frame.

Field inspections of all applicable Class IE circuit breakers are presently being performed to determine the extent of the problem. Upon completion of the inspections and subsequent Engineering evaluation, a final report will be provided. It is anticipated that the report will be submitted to your office by December 28, 1984.
