Dear Sir:

j As defined by Technical Specifications for the Vermont Yankee Nuclear

Power Station, Section 6.7.B.d, we are reporting the following Abnornal 1 Occurrence as A0-72-16.

?

) At 1938 on December 20, 1972 the No. 1 fan on the west cooling tower i tripped. The fan failed after approximately a seven minute run in the reverse direction during deicing operations on the west tower. This

! particular fan and associated cooling tower cell are necessary to the

} cooling tower portion of the Alternate Cooling System and must be operable j whenever irradiated fuel is in the reactor vessel and reactor. coolant 1 temperature is greater than 212*F as required by section 3.5.D.'l of

} Technical Specifications. The reactor was operating at approximately l 60% power at the time of the incident.

j.

! Inmediately after the failure both diesels and both service water d

sub-systems were checked for operability in compliance with Technical Specifications section 4.5.D.3, and found to be. satisfactory.

g g Investigation showed that the motor overload heater had failed,

  • 'j thereby severing power to the fan motor. The overload heate,r was g

replaced and the fan was returned to service on December 21. The fan has been operating without incident since the repair and the Plant Operations-Review Committee concluded that no further action is necessary.
