! 1. Power Systems Division received the attached EMD file

( 011-0 notification on April 17, 1986.

2. Determination of Reportability:

l (a) Where the dowels were misplaced to the extent I

assembly was not possible, the defect is obvious and th,e connecting rod bearing coulo not be used.

l R1 (b) Where the dowel displacement was not offset suffi-ciently to prevent assembly, the defect would not be obvious. A review of the reported defect revealed l

that the offset due to the dowel hole location is axial and not radial. If the bearing shell fits into the connecting rod without forcing it into place, the offset will not impact the proper func-tion of the bearings providing the bearing does not contact the radius of the web of the crankshaft.

I P'or suspect con rod bearing that may be installed into engines, a visual inspection of the crankcase shall be performed. This is to assure that the upper con rod bearing is in the center of its thfow with clearance on either side and not mislocated axially (fore and aft) such that the bearing shell might contact the radius or web of the crankcase.

Standard visual inspection procedures such as look-ing for signs of overheat and bearing distress i should be followed.

I (c) EMD advises that only six out of 900 bearings of

! the lot were found defective to date.

3. Resolution:

(a) All connecting rod bearings purchased between November 1985 and the end of April 1986 are suspect and shall be inspected dimensionally in accordance with the EMD attachment.
