South Texas Project Electric Generating Station Unit 1 Docket No. STN 50-498 Main Feedwater Hydraulic Transients The attached report describes hydraulic transient events which have occurred in the South Texas Project Unit 1 mai. feedwater system during filling of steam generators; the root causes of the events; and the corrective actions undertaken by HL&P to eliminate the causes of the events.

The hydraulic transient events were a direct result of feeding steam generators with feedwater at a temperature higher than the saturation temperature corresponding to the steam generator pressure. Corrective actions are being taken prior to entry into Mode 3 to procedurally ensure that operations of this type are prevented. This will entail restricting usage of main feedwater as a source of feedwater when the system pressure and temperature conditions would result in en t base flow.

Confirmatory testing will be comple :i y to entry into Mode 3.

Following completion of this confirmato -ing, IIIAP will issue a supplement to this report to document ' :c t. Its.

These events are not related to t e Auxiliary Feedwater System hydraulic transients that occurred in . An r+ mber 1987.
