VICE PRESIDENT NUCLEAR OPERATIONS SNRC-1224 JAN 161986 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Groundwater Monitoring Program Environmental Protection Plan Shoreham Nuclear Power Station Docket No. 50-322
References:
(1) Telephone conversation between R. Caruso (NRC), Mr. Wescott (NRC), P. G. Puttre (LILCO), and C. H. Mazzilli (LILCO) November 6, 1985.
(2) Letter SNRC-1162, dated May 21, 1985.
Dear Mr. Denton:
The Groundwater Monitoring Program described below, along with the monthly chloride analysis already yeing performed, will demonstrate that extraction of groundvater for plant operation does not adversely impact offsite private water supplien either due to excessive drawdown or saltwater intrusion. Furthermore, any negative impact associated with the extraction of groundwater ,~
for plant operation will be detected in a timely manner. thereby affording LILCO an opportunity to correct the problem prior to any impact being experienced offsite.
In response to requests made during the reference conversation, we are submitting the following information:
- 1. Copies of reports submitted to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) containing data on consumption and chloride content for the three water supply wells located onsite (S36836, S36837, and S36838) are attached. This package includes the most recent two years worth of data (11/83 through 11/85) as well ae data from 1980. These data clearly indicate that saltwater intrusion is not a problem, since the chloride levels are consistently below 10 ppm. .gp 8601220381 860116 i 16 PDR ADOCK 05000322 k P PDR
