SUBJECT:

TRANSFORMER EXPLOSION AND REACTOR TRIP At app mximately 10:10 a.m. (PST) on December 7, 1990, with the plant operating at full power, an explosion occurred in the area of the 'B' phase insulator of the plant's main transformer. This caused a turbine trip and a reactor trip. The reactor was stabilized in Mode 3. At 10:19 a.m. (PST), the licensee declared an unusual Event due to the explosion.

Th re was no fire and the Unusual Event was terminated at 11:00 a.m. (PST).

The availability of offsite power was not affected by the event. An inspection conducted of transformers associated with offsite power indicated that the explosion did not impact th3ce transformers. Preliminary indications are that during the reactor trip, one safety The licensee presently
