CRACKED FUEL PINS IN SPENT FUEL ASSEMBLIES Northern States Power Company reported that they were performing an inspection of 10 spent 7 x 7 fuel assemblies which had been-previously identified as fuel leakers. The examinations were visual using a.

TV camera. Preliminary results indicate longitudinal cracks in the clad. The cracks vary in length from 1 inch to.3 feet long.with a maximum width of approximately h inch. Approximately 30 of 40 corner fuel pins (Low enrichment fuel 1.13%.) indicate this condition.

The licensee is continuing examination of the 10 fuel bundles and plans to review the results with General Electric.

IE III has scheduled an inspection-for July 8 to review the licensee's results to date and visually examine the defective fuel.

Region III received notification of this occurrence by telephone from C. Larson Plant Ngr. at 11:30, 6/30/75.
