The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ADAMS Accession No. ML21180A271). A summary of the meeting is included below.
On April 26, 2023, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a partially closed public meeting with TerraPower, LLC (TerraPower) to provide the NRC staff with an overview of the mechanistic source term and radiological release consequences for the Natrium design. Participants included representatives from TerraPower, the Department of Energy, General Electric Hitachi and Bechtel.
During the public portion of the meeting, TerraPower provided an update on the Natrium source term methods development. TerraPower presented methodologies for the Licensing Basis Event (LBE) and Design Basis Accident (DBA) radiological consequences for the Natrium design. TerraPower also provided updates on source term analysis, radionuclide hazard identification and screening, and the source term Phenomena Identification and Ranking Tables (PIRT) process.
During the closed portion of the meeting, TerraPower representatives provided additional detail on the PIRT development and source term analysis for the LBE and DBA radiological consequence methodologies for the Natrium design.
The NRC staff and TerraPower representatives discussed the next steps for future interactions regarding the Natrium reactor design.
