OF THE OCTOBER 12, 2021, PRE-APPLICATION PUBLIC MEETING WITH TERRAPOWER, LLC TO DISCUSS THE STRUCTURES, SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS CLASSIFICATION FOR THE NATRIUM REACTOR DESIGN (EPID: L-2021-LRM-0071)
On October 12, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held an observation public meeting with TerraPower, LLC (TerraPower) to discuss its structures, systems, and components (SSC) classification methodology for the Natrium Reactor design.
Participants included NRC staff; representatives of Terrapower, General Electric Hitatchi, Bechtel, and PacifiCorp; and members of the public.
TerraPower provided an overview of its approach to classification of SSCs and defense-in-depth. The overview included the codes and quality standards to which TerraPower intends to design, fabricate, erect, and test the SSCs.
The public meeting notice, dated September 28, 2021, is in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under accession number ML21280A038. The NRC staff also posted the meeting notice on the NRCs public website.
The presentation slides are in ADAMS under accession number ML21279A331. The enclosure to this memorandum provides the list of meeting attendees.
The NRC staff began the public meeting with an introduction and logistical information. The NRC staff explained that the meeting was an observation meeting for TerraPower representatives to provide the NRC staff with an overview of any expected Natrium engineering computer codes. W. Kennedy SSC and how the classifications will be used to determine the level of quality assurance and any special treatments that it will apply to each SSC. At the end of the presentation, the NRC staff provided the public an opportunity to ask questions. Finally, the NRC staff asked for feedback, concerns, and any improvements that can be made to the public meeting process.
