The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ADAMS Accession No. ML21180A271). The main points of discussion during the meeting included:

On January 13, 2022, the NRC staff held a partially closed public meeting with TerraPower, LLC (TerraPower) to provide the NRC staff with an overview of the Radiological Source Term Methodology Development for the Natrium Design.

Participants included representatives from TerraPower, the U.S. Department of Energy, General Electric Hitachi, Bechtel, Duke Energy, and members of the general public. The enclosure provides the list of meeting attendees.

The NRC staff began the public meeting with introductions and explained that a portion of the meeting would be closed to the public to discuss proprietary information. During the public portion of the meeting, TerraPower presented how the enhanced safety features of the Natrium reactor are based on past U.S. SFR experiences (i.e., a pool-type, sodium-cooled fast reactor with metal fuel), the mechanistic source term methods development interfaces with all the safety analysis methodologies, and the mechanistic source term is a key to the risk-informed performance-based licensing framework and supports the Natrium plant design and licensing.

During the closed portion of the meeting, TerraPower representatives discussed the mechanistic source term evaluation model, sodium pool scrubbing and fuel handling accidents for the Natrium design. TerraPower representatives and the NRC staff discussed the next steps for future interactions regarding the Natrium Reactor design.
