Docket No 0

and 50-265

Dear Mr. Giambussu:

The purpose of this letter is to provide you with some addi-tional information concerning the calibration of the reactor building ventilation exhaust monitoring system.

As stated in the bases of our Technical Specifications, section 4. 8. A.,

the isotopic composition in the ventilation stack is assumed to be the same as that determined for the plant chinney un-less a stack sample can be analyzed for its isotopic composi-

~

tion.

Recently a sample was analyzed and we wish to inform you of the results.

Following a controlled shutdown on Unit 1, access. to the dry-well was necessary and the containment atmosphere was venti-lated with the purge system to the reactor building vent stack.

When a relatively high reading was observed on the G-M tube monitors, the plant chemiet took advantage of the opportunity and obtained samples for isotopic analysis.

The normal venti-lation exhaust during operation has always been either too dilute or of short duration such that meaningful samples could not be obtained.

The method of calibration used was to draw samples from the exhaust of the reactor vent NMC into a 5.8 liter Marenelli beaker which had been previously calibrated for noble gases on our multichannel analyzer system.

Several samples were drawn and analyzed during the period of release.

The com-position was essentially a 60% Xel33 and 40% Xel35 mixture.

An average E beta and E gamma was calculated to determine the reactor vent release limit.

This limit was 36,500 uci/sec. 8709280397 870;721 0

'g Mr. A. Giambusso March-29, 19 73 The results of our ' sampling are shown on the attached graph'

.to correlate the activity to observed monitor readings. during e-the release.

We believe that this' mixture of long lived xenon isotopes -is - more realistic than assuming -a mixture similar to therchimney~off' gas.

We have_therefore conserva-tively lowered the auto initiation set point of the Standby Gas Treatment system to 1 mr/hr to prevent an inadvertent release in excess - of the Technical Specification limits while purging the drywell.

Very truly yours, COMMONWEALTH EDISON COMPANY QUAD CITIES-NUCLEAR POWER STATION
