Dear Dr. Morris:
The Company herewith transmits forty (40) copies of Brunswick 4
Steam Electric Plant Design Report No. 8 (BSEP DR-8) titled "Small Steam Line Break."
1 Design Report No. 8 is submitted in response to your letter of August 25, 1970 in which you requested that we re-evaluate the maximum 1
drywell liner temperature that could result from a primary system blowdown from intermediate operating pressures.
The report is also submitted in response to conversations with your staff on October 2,1970 in Washington, D. C.
The report describes the investigation of the effects on the primary containment structure, and in particular the liner, of an accident defined as a small steam line break which results in a higher temperature and lower pressure than associated with a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) as defined in the BSEP PSAR.
The report concludes that the primary contain-ment structure will maintain its integrity during and af ter a small steam line break, can be safely returned to operation after the accident, and subsequently can respond satisfactorily to a design basis LOCA or additional small steam line break accidents.
We hope that Design Report No. 8 will enable your staff to conclude their review of the items mentioned above.
