Shoreham Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 6
d Docket No. 50-322 Deferral of Start-up and increase in Size
Dear Dr. Morris:
This letter will confirm our telephone conversation of October 30,1968
[
during which I informed you of Long Island Lighting Company's decision to defer construction and operation of the 540 Mwe Shoreham Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 for approximately two years beyond May 1,1973.
This decision was based on the fact that sharp increases in forecasted electric requirements for Long Island re-quire the installation of additional generating capacity for the spring of 1972.
Accordingly, a 380 Mwe oil fired unit will be added to our Northport Station to meet this need.
In discussions with Mr. Roger S. Boyd and his staff at a meeting in his j
office on November 21, 1968, LILCO representathes outlined our Company's re-vised plans for construction of an 800 Mwe BWR unit at the Shoreham site for oper-ation in May of 1975.
Design concepts developed for the 540 Mwe unit and pre-sented in the PSAR will be used as much as possible in the design of the new and Ifrger unit.
Present plans call for submission of an amendment to the PSAR by
)
April 1,1969 to provide the preliminary design of the 800 Mwe nuclear station.
We understand that this course of action is acceptable to the Commission and we request that Docket No. 50-322 be continued for the new unit.
I Further discussions at the November 21,1968 meeting singled out j
several technical areas of station design which are relatively unaffected by unit

We should like to continue conversations with the staff in these areas prior to the April revision of the PSAR.
We hope that our decision to defer and resize the Shoreham Station will not have caused lost review time since we feel confident that a large portion of the 540 Mwe design will be directly applicable to the 800 Mwe unit.
Very truly yours,
