DIABLO CANYON' TUBE STEEL DESIGN VERIFICATION

2) PG&E letter No. DCL-84-083, from J. O. Schuyler to J. B. Martin dated 2/29/84 In response to Phil Morrill's request (Reference 1) the LLNL/EG&G Design Verification Program Inspectors devoted April 3, 4, and 5 to the inspection of rectangular tube steel with a perimeter < 14 inches that has been used for Safety Class I systems. The objective wa~s to examine 100-200 pieces to verify the outsid'e radius of curvature to be > 2 times the tube wall thick-ness. The work was cnmpleted and the data transmitted verbally on April 6, 1984. In light of additional information (provided by John Burdoin at the site, [ Reference 2]) regarding the intended use for the data, it was decided to also determine the effective throat of all flare-bevel-welds to the tubes. The results of the inspections are shown on Attachment I and sumarized below.

Method of Measurement Although the licensee fabricated gaging templates that could have been used, more useful dimensional data was obtainel by psing a bevel protractor with a pivoting scale or two scales positioned as shown in Figure 1. -All three methods were used.

Inspection Results i

l The inspections were performed independently by three individuals in the contair. ment and auxiliary buildings of both units. It appears that the material has been used primarily to support small bore piping. In some instances, it was not possible to. verify all dimensions, including the wall thickness and the radius of curvature. As a consequence, a few pieces were

deleted from the data for this report when the radius of curvature could i

not be measured.

In all,129 pieces of tubing in 66 assemblies were examined and measured.

i Only 34 (26%) of these had an acceptable radius of curvature of at least twice the wall thickness (2t) and 61 (48%) had a wall thickness no greater than 1-1/2t. The rest (34 or 26%) were in between. All flare-bevel welds

' examined were at least flush with the tube surface. Canadian tube steel which was suspected to be sub . standard (identified by P.O. #11727 marked on the tubing) was found in only two assemblies. ,
