! Regulators - Georgia power For Vogtle Plant Incident i

i ATLANTA -DJ- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission proposed fining Georgia Power Co. $ 298,088 for supplying allegedly inaccurate and ancomplete information related to the reliability of diesel generators at the company's Vogtle power plant in

Seergia.

{

In a press release, the NRC said it will also issue demands l

for information to Georgia power regarding individual

{

performance failures of six officials to help the NRC determine i whether additional enforcement actions are necessary.

j Georgia Power is a unit of Southern Co. (90). A spokesman j

for Southern was not immediately available for comment.

j The NRC said its action stem from allegations received in June 1992 that Georgia Power management made false statements to the NRC regarding Sne reliability of the generators at Vogtle.

l i

The NRC said the company declared a site area emergency in i Maren 1999 during a refueling outage at Vogtle 1 when offsite power was lost concuerwist with the f ailure of the only diesel generator then available.

The NRC said Georgia Power agreed not to return Vogtle i to power until its Hegion II administrator was satisfied the plant could do so safely. The NRC said the company ende an oral .

pres ent at i on in Region II offices in April 1999 addressing diesel generator reliability, and the NRC granted permission for the unit to return to operation shortly thereaf ter.

After it received the allegations, the NRC said it conc 1wGed five violations occurred, and said the propsed penalty cites -

repeated failures of the company to provide complete and accurate information related to successful starts, failures or ,

problems occuring with the diesel generators. l The NRC said Georgia Power has 30 days to pay the proposed fine or protest it, and to admit or deny the violations.
