SUBJECT:

CONTROL ELEMENT ASSEMBLY CENTER FINGER i

CRACKING AT CALVERT CLIFFS 1 AND 2 (TAC NO. 66457) following determination that control element assemblies (CEAs) were experiencing center finger cracking at Calvert Cliffs 1 and 2, the NRC staff requested that the licensee submit a description of its CEA examination program, examination results and an analysir of observed cracks.

This information was submitted by BG&E on October 2, 1987 and was subsequently modified on April 6, 1988. This information was approved for withholding from public disclosure on April 27, 1988.

The Reactor System Branch (SRXB) was requested by PDI-1 to review the licensee's submittals to ensure that no concerns of safety significance were presented. SRXB was not required to provide a Safety Evaluction Report.

On March 7, 1988, SRXB completed its review of the licensee's submittals and determined that 1) the licensee's methodology for assessing the cracking phenomena was acceptable and 2) that this CEA cracking did not currently present any concerns of safety significance.
