T b M -C/h OCT 5 1982 Docket No. 50-344 FACILITY: Trojan Nuclear Plant LICENSEE: Portland General Electric Company (PGE)

SUBJECT:

SUMMRY OF SITE VISIT AND MEETING RE: fMSONRY WALL DESIGN, SEPTEMBER 28-30, 1982 On September 28, 1982, D. Jeng. H. Chokshi and C. Trammell of the NRC staff visited the Trojan site for a walkdown of masonry wall construction and improvements made both as a result of the Control Building proceeding (seismic improvements to shear walls) and revised criteria resulting fromLER79-15(out-of-planeimprovements).

On September 29 and 30, 1982, the NRC staff met with representatives of PGE and Bechtel Power Corporation at the Bechtel offices in San Francisco for a two-day technical meeting on masonry wall design.

The basis document for the discussion was PGE's letter of October 23, 1980, which set forth evaluation criteria for all types of masonry walls (single and double wythe and composite) for consideration of both in-plane and out-of-plane loads. Tornado loads were also discussed.

On May 8, 1982, the NRC staff requested additional information concerning the PGE 10-23-80 letter. PGE's responses dated 6-19-81 and 6-24-82 were also discussed.

Attendees are listed in the Attachment.

The meeting resulted in six action items, also litted in the Attachment.

In a telephone call following the meeting. PGE stated that they would respond to all action items by about mid-November, 1962).

At the conclusion of the meeting, the NRC staff stated that, subject to (1) receipt of satisfactory responses to five of the action items and (2) completion of a successful confirmatory masonry wall testing program, masonry wall design review would be complete for Trojan.
