Dear Mr. Keppler:
This letter is submitted as an Interim Report regarding the welding of the main stream line at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit #1.
This was discussed by Mr. E. C. Novak, General Superintendent, Power Engineering and Construction, with Mr. D. W. Hayes, NRC Region III Office of Inspection and Enforcement, on July 12, 1976. This condition is viewed as a significant deficiency pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e).
During postweld radiography, a crack-like indication was found in the weld between the 26 inch to 24 inch reducer and the 26 inch portion of the main stream line off the IB steam generator. Following numerous attempts, B&W Construction Company was unable to clear the crack-like indication. To correct this condition, the weld and the affected area were removed and a short spool piece inserted.
A definitive report of the deficiency, analysis of the safety implications and the corrective action taken will be submitted to your office in accordance with 10 CFR 50.55(e) upon completion of our study of this problem.
