VTVYS1 05000271 LER 78-34/3L EVENT DESCRIPTION AND PROBABLE CONSEOUENCES During steady state operation, Control Room personnel observed the Air Ejector Off Cas Monitor "A" behaving in an erratic manner drawing excessively hi;;h traces. The Chemistry and llealth Physics Department was notified and verified that this monitor was providing inaccurate infor-mation. This condition is contrary to Technical Specification 3.2.D.

The monitor was replaced with a spare unit and the channel was declared operable. Since the redundant Off Gas Monitor "B" was availabic and op-erable and of f Gas Mor.itor "A" was out-of-service for less than twenty hours, there were no adverse consequences to the public health or safety as a result of this event. There were no previously reported similar occurrences.

CAUSE DESCRIPTION AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS The apparently failed monitor was subsequently checked-out and all attempts to reproduce the above described responses were unsuccessful.

In addition, all instrument checks proved satisf actory. Therefore, the cause of the failure could not be identified. No further corrective action was determined necessary.
