Introduction Introduction NRC Public Meeting on Risk-Informed Resolution of GSI-191 Topic: LOCA Frequency 1 March 2012 Ernie Kee, STPNOC, keeej@stpegs.com Zahra Mohaghegh, Soteria Consultants, mohaghegh@soteriaconsultants.com 1/6

Introduction Attendees LOCA Frequency and Uncertainty Quantification, the University of Texas at Austin Elmira Popova Alexander Galenko CASA Grande, Los Alamos National Laboratory Bruce Letellier PRA, ABS Consulting David Johnson Don Wakefield Oversight, Soteria Consultants Zahra Mohaghegh Seyed Reihani The South Texas Project Steve Blossom Rick Grantom Ernie Kee Jamie Paul 2/6

Introduction Project Objectives Through a risk-informed approach, provide the necessary technical basis for the NRC to close the safety issues related to GSI-191 by the end of 2013 Understand and implement the necessary licensing requirements needed to support an exemption to certain requirements of 10 CFR 50.46 Follow and build upon previous successful regulatory actions such as:

14-day Diesel AOT 10 CFR 50.69 Exemption Request Initiative 4b, Risk Managed Technical Specifications The licensing approach is based on Regulatory Guide 1.174 Decision making is based on the difference in risk between a perfect design and the existing design 3/6

Introduction Computational Flow The LOCA frequency, based on NUREG 1829, is used in both CASA Grande and Plant-specific PRA modules of the integrated model.

CASA Grande provides estimates for the likelihood of three basic events of the plant-specific PRA by modeling their underlying physical phenomena and, by adding uncertainty analysis to the physical models 4/6

Introduction Meeting Materials and Summary LOCA Frequency:

Article: A. Galenko and E. Popova, Sampling of LOCA frequencies and break size for the STP GSI-191 resolution Presentation on article: Sampling of LOCA frequencies and break size for the STP GSI-191 resolution (presentation given by Elmira Popova and follow-up discussion) 5/6
