RE: here's the story I mentioned

George, Ground motion acceleration measured in g cannot be predicted directly from just an earthquake magnitude.

Ground motion acceleration is predicted from magnitude as well as distance and the local site geology. Please call me to discuss. The 0.12g pga does not correspond to a magnitude 5.9 earthquake and the 0.18g pga does not correspond to a M6.2 earthquake. I don't know where this comes from.

RE: here's the story I mentioned

Tim, Can anyone tell me if this information being reported by DowJones is correct?

The rock part of the site is built to withstand 0.12g--equivalent to a magnitude-5.9 quake. The soil part of the site, meanwhile, is built to withstand 0.1 8g--or a magnitude-6.2 quake.
