Modification of Recirculation System (Unit 1)

a.

Observation of Work Activities (1) Welding in Progress The inspector observed welding of Nozzle No. N2E150, Welds No. 2 and No. 3; and Nozzle No. N2G240, Weld No. 1.

The inspector determined that:

(1) applicable welding procedures were used and met; (2) welders were currently qualified; and (3) physical appearances were acceptable.

(2) Joint Preparation and Alignmqnt The inspector observed fit-up of Nozzle No. N2G240 Weld No. 1, It was determined that the joint align-ment met the welding procedure requirements and QC verified the alignment prior to welding.

(3) NDE of Welds The inspector observed ultrasonic examinations of Nozzle No. N2C90, kald No. 3; and liquid penetrant examination of Nozzle No. N2F210 Weld No. 3.

It was determined that:

(1) surface condition was acceptable for the applicable examinations; (2) procedure requirements were met; and (3) personnel were properly qualified.

(4) Visual Examination of Welds

'The inspector visually examined Nozzle No. N2F210 Welds No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3; and Nozzle No. N2C90, Welds No.

1, No. 2, and No. 3.

It was determined that:

(1) weld surface finish and appearance were acceptable, and there was no evidence of wall thinning due to 3rinding and (2) arc strikes and weld spatters were r 't evident.

Review of Documentations The inspector reviewed the following documentations:

(1) General Electric Company (GE) welding procedures No.

8.2.3.5, Revision 0 and No. 43.2.4.5 and their qualifi-cation records.

(2) Four welders' qualification records.

(3) GE procedure No. UT-1, Revision 3, " Ultrasonic Examin-ation of Dissimilar Metal Welds."

(4) GE procedure No. NDE-PT-1001, Revision 5, " Liquid Pene-trant Examination Procedure."

(5) One NDE personnel qualification records.

(6) Traveler and Joint Process Control Sheet for welds of Nozzles No. N2C90 and No. N2F210.

(7) Calibration record of welding machines.

(8) Matnrfai certification for ER308L welding wire with heats No. 376411 and No. 21306; ER208L Y insert with heat No.

742814SK; ERNi Cr-3 welding wire with lot No. X4235N382 and ERNi Cr-3 Y insert with Heat No. NX5027D.

It was determined that the above documents met the applicabic procedure and code requirements.

Exit Interview The inspectors met with the licensee representatives (denoted under Persons Contacted) at the conclusion of the inspection on April 18, 1979. The inspector summarized the results of the inspection con-cerning the area inspection. The licensee acknotledged the information.
