Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) N Bearing Inspection a.
Introduction As part of the corrective action program following the 1985 emergency diesel generator bearing failures (Report No. 50-341/85046) a demonstration test program was performed on EDGs No. 11 and 13.
which included 30 prelubed " slow" pe" of demonstrated operability, During the test program an "envelo starts, 10 prelubed " fast" starts, and a minimum 7 days of continuous operation at a load between 1500 and 2600 kw, was generated.
Selected upper crankshaft bearings were inspected following completion of the demonstration test program.
Main bearing N on both EDGs showed a slight amount of surface distress.
A small amount of aluminum transfer to the journal on EDG N was experienced.
As a result, the NRC's Safety Evaluation of the Fermi 2 Emergency Diesel generators, dated July 16, 1986, required a reinspection of EDG No. 13, Dearing N once the envelope of demonstrated operability was reached.
b.
Reinspection of EDG No. 13, Bearing N On March 16, 1987, the licensee reached the established envelope of operability on EDG N when its 10th fast start occurred.
The engine's operating history from March 3,1986, to March 16, 1987, was: 7 fast prelubricated starts
3 fast dry starts
24 slow prelubricated starts
224 hours of operation
" - - - __ _ j . On March 18, 1987, EDG N was taken out of service for inspection.
All bearings passed the 0.002" gap check.
The upper charkshaft, main bearing N top (loaded) half was removed for inspection.
Examination of the bearing revealed no additional degradation from that found on February, 1986.
The journal surface showed no signs of metal transfer from the bearing.
The inspector also reviewed the results of the engine's lube oil monthly samples.
No abnormal results or trends were found.
No violations or deviations were identified.
3.
Exit Interview The inspector met with licensee representatives (denoted in Paragraph 1) at the conclusion of the inspection on March 18, 1987.
The inspector-summarized the results of the inspection and discussed the likely informational content of the inspection report with regards to documents reviewed by the inspector.
The licensee did not identify any such documents as proprietary.
