Observation of Core Spray Sparger (Unit 1)
Based on reported cracking of the Core Spray system sparger at two BWR facilities TVA performed a remote video (TV) inspection of accessible areas of the Unit 1 sparger.
The inspector witnessed this inspection.
No cracking was noted during the inspection.
However, TVA personnel indicated that further review would be'conducted of the video tape that was recorded during the inspection.
No items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.
6.
Review of Method of Weld Fitup Inspection (Units 1, 2 and 3)
The applicable code for installation of safety related piping at Browns Ferry is the Power Piping Code, B31.1.
Concerns were recently expressed to NRC:RII regarding the use of welders in lieu of QC inspectors to perform fitup inspection of safety related welds when the applicable code is the Power Piping Code, B31.1.
The inspector discussed performance of fitup

-2" inspection at Browns Ferry with maintenance and outage management personnel.
In both cases it was indicated that QA/QC personnel are used for fitup inspections of safety related welds. It should be noted that site maintenance personnel seldom perform safety related welding and QA/QC welding controls of the outage personnel were recently reviewed by NRC (See NRC:RII Report Nos. 50-259, 260, 296/79-29).
No items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.

Followup of Licensee Event (Unit 1)

TVA licensee Event Report No. 80-04:
This item was initially reported to RII on January 31, 1980 and concerned a linear indication found in Reactor Water Clean-up system weld No. DRWC-1-2 during inservice inspection.
The inspector reviewed TVA's intended actions concerning this indication.
It was verified that TVA intends to repair the defect during the present outage.
The preliminary repair procedure appeared to contain appropriate precautions and required inspections.
