Response to Request for Additional Information (TAC NO. M91719) dated April 17,1994.

Dear Mr. Adams,

I hope that the following answer will be adequate:

QUESTION: A nucleur reactor is defined in 10 CFR 50,2 as an appatatus, other than an alc a c weapon, designed or used to sustain nuclearfission in a selfsupporting chain reaction. The LOPRA is currents, Jesigned to meet this definition. Il hat permanent design changes do you propose to the LOPRA to retu~s it to a subcritical assembly under the Advanced 7RIGA license? Are there any radiation protection issues associated with these changes?

ANSWER: The LOPRA grid plate will contain aluminum slugs in place of fuel such that the maximum k.g shall not exceed 0.99 as specified in the Advanced TRIGA T.S. 3.9 (a). No radiation protection issues are associated with these changes.
