Dear Mr..Michales:

I am writing today to inform you of changes to the additional cludding sample surveillances I:sted in a letter dated February 14,1992. The Reactor Use Committee met on September 9,1992, to review the results obtained from the additional surveillance of the cladding samples. After completing their review, the Reactor Use Committee cgreed that tne performance of the adoitional cladding surveillances should continue with one exception. The photograph 3 taken with the optical microscope revealed little, if any, usefd information. A motion was made to discontinue the optical microscope photographs. The motion was passed (5-0).

I would also like to provide you with the results of the surveillancas. .All fission product activity, pH, and conductivity analyses have been normal. The 35mm photographs showed a definite darkening of the cladding samples with little or no previous water exposure. The darkening appeared to be associated with spacers in r4 ntact _with the -

sample. The cladding sample which was previously darkened showed na further

. darkening.

We will continue to monitor the cladding after each 20 ' hour period of submersion.

Our Reactor Use Committee will be updated at each meeting and I will keep you informed of any changes. If you have further questions pl ease call at 515/294-0539.

Sincerely,

.m .i l-w <h 40 dohn T. Adams '
