I 1.0 GENERAL I As specified in the " Report on the Construction Settlement Monitoring Program for North Anna Nuclear Power Station - Units 3 and 4," dated April 2,1979 (April 2,1979 report), all settlement data obtained for Category I structures during construction will be submitted annually.

This report is the first annual report submitted in fullfillment of that requirement. A discussion of the settlement history of each Category I structure will be included along with the settlement data.

The April 2, 1974 report also stated that changes in location or additions to the initial settlement monitoring points would be submitted with the annual reports. Section 4.0 of this first annual report addresses pertinent. revisions.

2.0 CONSTRUCTION STATUS I Construction activities were limited during 1979. No additional settlement monitoring points were installed during this period. As stated in the April 2,1979 report, monitoring of the Service Water Pump House (SWPH), which began in December 1974, was initiated prior to development of the construction settlement monitoring program.

Presently, construction of the SWPH is approximately 60 percent complete.

Monitoring of this structure was continued during 1979. At present, this is the only Category I st-ucture being monitored. Construction of the remaining Category I str ctures, which are all rock founded, I

I has generally not progressed beyond foundation placement. The settlement I monitoring points for these structures will be installed when construction is resumed.

!I 3.0 PERMANENT REFERENCE MONUMENTS

, Two permanent reference monuments have been installed in the Units 3 and 4 construction area. The location of these reference monuments is as shown on Figure 27 of the April 2, 1979 report.

4.0 REVISIONS I Figures 16 and 18 (circulating water intake and discharge tunnels respectively) of the April 2. 1974 report have been revised to correct the number of existing settlement monitoring points. The revised figures are numbered 16A and 18A. The changes consist of the following:

I 1. Figure 16A - Circulating Water Intake Tunnel: Settlement monitoring point I-105 is an existing point established in December, 1977.

2. Figure 18A - Circulaf.ing Water Discharge Tunnel: Settlement monitoring points D-3, D-4, and D-5, shown as installed points in the April 2,1979 re port , have not been installed. Point locaticas 1

D-3 and D-4 have been eliminated due to access problems. Point D-5 will be installed when construction of the circulating water discharge tunnel is resumed.

The settlement history of the service water pump house (SWPil) has been evaluated in the " Report on Settlement of the Service Water Pump House, North Anna Units 3 and 4," dated March 1976 (Serial No. 957, II dated March 31, 1976). Since the issuance of that report, no additional construction of the SWPil has taken place. The service water reservoir was filled in August and September 1976. Settlement subsequent to January 1976 (last data reported in the March 1976 report) has been approximately 0.6 inch for the south wall and 0.3 inches for the north wall. Of this, approximately 0.5 inches and 0.2 inches had occured by October 1976 for the south and north walls respectively. Since late 1976, actual settlement for both the south and north walls is approximately 0.1 inch.

I Data sheets of SWPli settlement readings taken since the initiation of the SWPli monitoring are included as Appendix A. Future reports will include only additional data obtained subsequent to the previous annual report.

SUMMARY

I No additional settlement monitoring points were installed during 1979 due to limited construction activity. Monitoring of the Category I SWPil was contim.ed. Settlement of the SWPH has been negligible since late 1976.
