Subject:
Docket No. 50-482: Changes to Wolf Creek Generating Station Emergency Response Data System (ERDS)
Gentlemen:
Regulation 10 CFR 50, Appendix E, Section VI.3b, "Maintaining Emergency Response Data System," requires that "Hardware and software changes, with the exception of data point modifications, that could affect the transmission format and computer communication protocol to the ERDS must be provided to the NRC as soon as practicable and at least 30 days prior to the modification." Pursuant to this regulation, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation (WCNOC) is submitting this letter to inform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of pending hardware and software changes at Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS) that could affect the transmission format and computer communications protocol to the Emergency Response Data System (ERDS). The changes were previously discussed with the NRC during a conference call on April 14, 2011, during which it was confirmed that WCNOC was scheduled to implement the changes in August 2011.
The changes will involve a conversion from a dial-up modem system to a more reliable Internet based utility using a Plant Computer information server and NRC supplied Virtual Private Network (VPN) appliance.
During transition to the VPN based system, ERDS will be unavailable for a short period of time.
This unavailability will be coordinated with the NRC ERDS Center personnel. Normal backup communications (telephone) will remain available.
This letter contains no commitments. If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact me at (620) 364-4175 or Ms. Diane Hooper at (620) 364-4041.
