s Docket 50-461 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Subj ect: Clinton Unit I Constuction Schedule Update

Reference:

USNRC letter 5/29/81, H. R. Denton to W. J. Kelley, Illinois Power Company

Dear Mr. Denton:

1 The referenced letter requested the Company to pro-vide a quarterly update report on the Clinton Unit I construction schedule. The current project schedule indi-cates fuel load of January,1984 and commercial operation I projected for August, 1984.

Construction of Clinton Unit No. 1 is continuing at a .

reduced pace as a result of stop work orders issued during the first half of 1982 and restraints on che release of new work caused by an inspection backlog. The Company i has presented plans to the staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to resolve the problems associated with the stop work orders. Work is being partially resumed, with NRC The approval, in each of the areas affected by the orders.

Company is in the process of evaluating the construction schedule and determining the extent of delay. This pr:ocess will be completed by the end of May, 1983. Your office will be immediately advised when new fuel load and commer-l cial operation dates have been established.

S* relv yours,
