SUMMARY

OF JUNE 13-15, 1989 PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS PROBABILISTIC RISK ASSESSMENT, DIABLO CANYON LONG TERM SEISMIC PROGRAM (LTSP) (TAC NOS. 55305 ARD 68049)

On June 13-15, 1989 the NRC staff and its consultants from Brookhaven National

, Laboratory (BNL) met with PG&E in San Francisco, California to discuss selected l aspects of the probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) summarized in PG&E's Final l

Report on the Diablo Canyon Long Term Seismic Program. The purpose of the f meeting was to discuss the review findings by the NRC staff and BNL on the i solid state protection system, auxiliary feedwater system, and auxiliary saltwater (ASW) system. The staff and BNL also conducted an audit of PG&E's analysis of the selected components on June 15, 1989.

Attendees at the meeting e given in Enclosure 1. The agenda for the meeting is given in Enclosure 2. A copy of all the viewgraphs presented at the meeting

! has been transmitted to the meeting participants by PG&E letter dated July 25, I

1989. This material has been docketed (Accession number 8907310303)and.is

) available for public inspection at the PDR and the LPDR.

Action items for PG&E that resulted from the meeting are given in Enclosure 3.

The NRC staff requested that PG&E respond to these action items as soon as possible, so that the staff and BNL may continue their review in this area. A BNL letter dated June 29, 1989, summarizing the BNL observations from the meeting and documenting some of the details of the assumptions used by BNL in evaluating the Diablo Canyon ASW system, is attached as Enclosure 4.

EtlCLOSURE 3 ACTION ITEMS'FOR PG&E FROM PRA MEETING,' 06/13-15/89 l

1. PG&E is requested to provide the block diagram containing the Boolean equations used in the seismic risk quantification. This diagram was shown by-P6&E during the meeting.
2. While discussing the reduced model of the internal events sequences during the' meeting, a draft document was exhibited by PG&E.' This draft document contained notes'on at'least some of the sequences detailing some of the idiosyncracies built into them.~ Because this documentation would be extremely beneficial.to have while performing the leading sequence review, PG&E is requested to' provide this information.
3. The Diablo Canyon PRA assumes that a s. ingle ASW pump can be used to supply the full cooling needs of both units.(under all modes) given the other-three.. pumps.are not-available. The pump capability was briefly discussed.

at the meeting but no analysis was presented. PG&E is requested to

-provide additional information to justify this. assumption.
