MEDIA INTEREST IN EVACUATION OF SITE ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY j DUE TO POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE MATERIAL Substantial media attention was given to the licensee's discovery of a I small amount of Picric acid that was in a potentially unstable (explosive) condition at a nearby site laboratory. The building was j evacuated as a precaution and the licensee requested assistance from the j Charlotte Hazardous Material Team and also consulted a contract hazardous I material disposal service. The acid was determined to be more stable than initially suspected. The acid was restabilized, diluted and stored in the I licensee's hazardous material area for routine disposal.

The laboratory is located in the licensee's owner controlled area but is not within the protected area boundary and did not affect safe operation of the McGuire units. j There has been rnedia interest in this event.
