CONTAMINATED EQUIPMENT LOCATED IN UNRESTRICTED. AREAS

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on September. 6, the . licensee' reported it ha'd identified uncontrolled contaminated equipment located in the Great Neck storage warehouse on thel owner controlled ~ area. The equipment included a hydrolaze unit and numerous tools.

The loose contamination . levels on the hydrolaze unit- ranged between 1000 - 10,000 DPM/100 cm2 and one on-contact radiation level reading of 3.0 millirem / hour. The contamination consisted of beta and gamma radiation with no alpha indicated.

Approximately '8,000 tools were surveyed; twenty tools . indicated contamination with

. levels greater than the free-release limits.

The-licensee initiated the recent surveys as a result of an ongoing internal assessment, and an August, 1989 INP0 finding revealing uncontrolled contaminated tools. The licensee continues to survey the remain.ng equipment in the storage warehouse. The resident staff is reviewing the licensee's corrective action plans.

The licensee ' notified the NRC at 5:15 p.m. on September 6' pursuant to 10 CFR 72(b)(2)(vi), and further. provided a press release.

LThe State of Connecticut has been notified and a State. representative accompanied the resident inspector on a tour of the warehouse facility on September 7 to review licensee actions.
