UNUSUAL EVENT - POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATED / INJURED MAN At 4:40 p.m. on January 20, 1988, the licensee declared an UNUSUAL EVENT based on an incident which occurred on the refueling floor which involved a potentially contaminated and injured worker. The initial report to the NRC Operations Center and the resident inspectors indicated that the worker apparently stepped through a hole in the grati,1g between the reactor vessel flange and the refuel cavity floor and injured his leg. Initial surveys of the worker indicated contamination levels of up to 12,000 cpm in the vicinity of the leg injuries. The UNUSUAL EVENT was secured at 5:25 p.m.

after the worker was transported off site.

The worker was ev.tricated by the licensee's fire brigade and was transported to the local Oswego Hospital via ambulance (with a splint covering a small section of anti-contamination clothing) and was accompanied by a station radiation technician. No skin contamination, no intake of radioactive material, and no significant radiation exposure was involved. The piece of protective clothing measuring 3,000 cpm was returned to the site. The worker was treated and released with only minor abrasions on his left thigh.

The resident inspectors are ensite reviewing licensee actions. The State of New York has been notified. The licensee has made a press release.
