CRACKS IN ISOLABLE PORTION OF REACTOR WATER CLEANUP SYSTEM PIPING The licensee is conducting a nondestructive volumetric examination of austenitic stainless steel pipe bends, 2 inches or greater in diameter, which had been cold worked without subsequent solution annealing. This action is in compliance with the Region I, Philadelphia, Immediate Action letter to NMPC dated March 23.

, Cracks have been identified in four (4) additional sections of six (6) inch diameter, schedule 80, type 304, Reactor Water Cleanup System (RWCUS)

Pipe bends. The cracks are on the inside diameter of the pipe bends. They are longitudinal and transverse, up to one inch in length and penetrate a maximum of one third of the. wall thickness. As the cracks found earlier, all are located in isolable sections of the RWCUS.

The licensee has completed the examination of bends in similar six inch diameter RWCUS piping and three inch diameter control rod drive piping i inside the drywell. All of these bends were found satisfactory.

, The licensee reports difficulty in locating replacement material.

Media interest is expected because of prior press coverage of this O y

t occurrence. The licensee issued a press release on the shutdown, including /

j the cause. A press release by NRC is not planned at this time.
