HIGH RADIATION LEVELS ON TWO SHIPPING PACKAGES On May 16, 1987, a receipt inspection of two radioactive materials shipping packages 4

sent from Nine Mile Point to the Brunswick Nuclear Power Station showed external radiation levels of approximately 2000 mrem /hr and 1500 mrem /hr on contact on the

underside of the packages. The packages contained a cutting machine used to shear stellite rollers from BWR control blades and its platform used as a holder and jig
during cutting operatfors. The packages were carried ~on a flatbed truck as an exclusive-use shipment on May 15, 1987 from the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station,_ Unit
1. The measured radiation levels exceed the NRC and DOT limit of 200 mrem /hr at contact.

-The radiation levels appeared to be small isolated portions of the packages and dose rates at 6 feet and in the truck cab were within NRC and 00T limits according to measurements made by the Brunswick radiation protection staff. -

The resident at the Nine Mile Point (Region I) and Brunswick (Region II) stations are monitoring the respective licensee's inquiries into the event.

The States of New York and North Carolina will be informed of this incident.
